Facebook as a Video Platform?

Listen to the Article

In recent years, Facebook has increasingly been used as a platform for sharing videos. It is due to the fact that Facebook offers several features that make it ideal for video sharing.

For example, Facebook allows users to post videos of any length and also provides users with the ability to share videos with their friends or the public. In addition, Facebook videos can be embedded on other websites, which makes it easy for people to view them.

Despite these advantages, there are some drawbacks to using Facebook as a video platform.

Facebook itself is a little confused on it’s future as a video platform. At the start of 2022, there were reports that Facebook wants to focus on the short form content rather than their plants to compete with YouTube and make it a platform for long for video content.

Facebook is cluttered.

There is so much mixed in a single platform. It has your friends, the celebrities you are following, and brands trying to get your attention. Everything content piece competes with each other to appear in the newsfeed. A video could be easily missed. Posting a video to Facebook will end up buried among all the other videos on your Facebook feed.

It’s not Search Centric.

If, after Google, I have to look for a piece of information, it’s mostly YouTube. It is the second largest search engine for a reason. And a large chunk of video viewers is looking for something to watch. Facebook search needs improvement.

There is a difference between Facebook and Youtube when you search for something like ‘how to cook a pancake. The results on youtube look much more refined, something I would like to watch.

Most of the content is stolen/repurposed.

This has been an issue with Facebook for a very long time. There was even a term coined by a popular YouTuber whose content was stolen and repurposed on Facebook.

Even in my news feed, repurposed content makes an appearance daily.

It’s Visually not unpleasing.

Facebook is also not very pleased when it comes to presenting the continent. It is also not optimized if we compare it with youtube.

While the homepage of youtube gives you more than ten videos to choose from, along with vertical videos that appear in a separate room on a single screen.

The Facebook Newsfeed is just one-third of the entire computer screen, giving room for only content pieces, which can even be a photo or an article post shared by someone.

Facebook does have a dedicated videos page called ‘Watch’ but that page too is not well organized and doesn’t show quality videos.

So, if I go to Facebook to watch something, it is mostly on my phone, and these are mostly what will video, and it’s all mindless scrolling that does not achieve anything in the end and only places you guilty of wasting your time.

While the feeling is mutual on the youtube channel as well but it’s quite rare to have them. I am only inside youtube specifically to watch someone who or whom I have subscribed to, and I can easily find them also, thanks to the better recommendation system of youtube.
